The Days of Chivalry Are Over!

I have lived in Jacksonville, N.C., since 1994 and am so grateful to be surrounded by real hero’s everyday. But, I remember a time when a person would go to walk to the door and gentlemen would hold opened the door for them. The good old days when a women’s husband was deployed and, a fellow Marine would help with mowing the yards. Something has changed in the last several years. Not to generalize it just to the Marine but the breakdown of manners in the youth.

I watched the last month as countless Marines (men in general) drove by a women with 3 kids in a car with a blown out and no one even stopping to help her. The time was when all the Marines got off at 4.30 in the afternoon and it was 10 to 15minutes before gentlemen actually stopped. The brave mother was trying to change the tire; yes women are becoming more self-sufficient, a job that would have took a man 5 minutes. Dad’s don’t walk outside and teach their daughter’s how to change the oil and tires. With so many men being deployed many of these women can’t call their husband for help. Not just saying that only military men can be responsible for that as well.

I seen women coming in and out of doors with there hands full and no one to open the doors. I know that times change as with society but manners are one thing that I wish would stay the same. These are rough times for these families that have to be with out their love one. It a huge responsibility to be a single parent each and every time their spouse is deployed. Since the military has cut back on the new entries into the military, this keeps the same people returning again and again.

You never know when a person holding open a car door when someone has their hands full or, offering a helping hand can make the world of difference to someone who missing a pair. I know that many people forget that it the little things in your day that you do for other that builds character and not to mention great “Karma”. Who could not uses some of that?

Why bust on the military? It's youth in general with both parents fully in the work force. Manners aren't taught to the young like they should be. It's the way the country is moving so get used to it. How many children do you see screaming in the store and throwing fits when they don't get what they want? Some parents aren't teaching their children right and wrong. There are so many parents that are more concerned with being their child's friend than being a parent. This just isn't the military that doesn't have manners. I'd rather you thank a service member for your freedom to complain than group every single one of them into the "no manners" group.

All talk of manners aside, I'll stand up for the thought of personal responsibility. The woman that was addressed in the article should know how to change a tire efficiently if she's driving a vehicle it's all just basic common sense. If you take responsibility for the short falls of your decisions, then you won't be so angry when others don't pick up your slack.

A proper gentleman who is military? Blah! What a joke! Twenty years ago, give or take, a movie with the title being an oxymoron was, "An Officer And A Gentleman." It's simply not possible. Nor is it advisable. They shouldn't be allowed to marry for at least the first tour, and there's a reason the federal government fences them in! Please, leave the military out of it. Civilian chivalry is far from dead, you simply must look away, far away, from a military area.
