Carteret Writers Hosts Award Winning Author and Historian
Carteret Writers will host award winning writer and historian Mamre Marsh Wilson at their March 11 luncheon meeting at 11:30 at Capt. Bill's Waterfront Restaurant in Morehead City. Lunch is a la carte from the menu and there is no additional program fee. Anyone interested in writing is welcome to attend.
In 1999, Ms. Wilson researched and co-authored the book, "Beaufort’s Old Burying Ground North Carolina." The following year, Arcadia Press asked her to write the history of Beaufort as part of their Making of America series. "Beaufort: North Carolina," released in 2002, is already a collectible, commanding more than three times its original price. This book and her earlier work about the old burying ground both received the Willie Parker Peace History Book Award from the North Carolina Society of Historians (NCSH) in 2004. That same year, the NCSH proclaimed her the McDaniel Lewis Historian of the Year for "exceptional and extensive contributions toward the collection, preservation and perpetuation of North Carolina’s rich history."
"The Story of North Carolina's Historic Beaufort," released in 2007, covers 300 years of history and includes over 50 photos and sketches. As Historiographer for the Episcopal Diocese of East Carolina, Ms. Wilson compiles and maintains the histories of the parishes within the diocese. Her history of St. Paul’s parish will be published in 2008.
Born in Connecticut, Ms. Wilson has lived in Beaufort over 30 years. Her love for her adopted home is evident from her extensive research and her writing. Not one for dry histories, she sets the scene and shows the people who lived it. Her visit with Carteret Writers promises to be interesting.
Founded in 1984, Carteret Writers is a nonprofit organization dedicated to cultivating camaraderie between writers and promoting the art of writing. Besides monthly meetings held on the second Tuesday of each month at Capt. Bill's Restaurant in Morehead City, smaller genre critique group meetings are available to members.
