Kinston Council denies nonpartisan appeal

Proponents seek alternate avenues for appeal

Staff Writer

An attempt to appeal the U.S. Justice Department's decision to deny nonpartisan elections in Kinston failed tonight as the City Council voted 3-2 against filing an appeal.

Councilman Will Barker made a motion to appeal "based on the fact that two thirds of the voters who voted on this issue in the (2008) referendum asked to have nonpartisan elections."

Despite Barker's motion and pleas from Kinston residents and political activists outside Kinston to appeal, Council members Joe Tyson, Alice Tingle and Robbie Swinson voted against it.

Councilman Jimmy Cousins voted for an appeal.
