You have the right to breath clean air
Did you know that Craven and Pamlico Counties have over 70 places to eat at that are 100% smoke-free?? Many restaurants in the past few years have decided to open up totally smoke-free. Some have changed their policy after being around for many years.
Restaurants have the ability to make their own decisions about their smoking status, so it is very important that you voice your opinions to staff and management.
Secondhand smoke is a huge trigger for asthma attacks, but it even affects the body of people without asthma.
For example, if a nonsmoker breathes in tobacco smoke for 30 minutes, their body starts to respond as if they were actually smoking the cigarette themselves.
There is no safe level of exposure to secondhand smoke. To have a “good” smoking section in a restaurant you would need the wind speed of a tornado to eliminate all the toxic chemicals.
More than eight million children in the United State have asthma.
Asthma is a leading reason that children miss school or end up in the hospital.
Asthma makes it hard for people to breathe.
Sometimes people even die from asthma. This disease has not cure yet, but it can be controlled.
The number of asthma cases is growing, and more people die from it every year.
These deaths don’t need to happen. During an asthma attack, the breathing tubes in the lungs swell up, the muscles around these tubes tighten, and the tubes make large amounts of thick mucus.
If someone is having a severe asthma attack, get him or her to a hospital emergency room right away. Some signs of a severe attack include the person’s asthma inhaler medicine not working within 15 minutes, the person’s lips or fingernails turn blue, or the person has trouble walking or talking due to shortness of breath.
The most important thing to know about asthma is that it can be controlled. Asthma patients who learn what medicine to take and what triggers attacks can avoid them most of the time. This means people with asthma can lead normal lives. The Craven-Pamlico Asthma Coalition holds a workshop each month to teach parents of children with asthma how to help them lead normal, active “No-Attacks” lives. Call 636-4936 for more information.
