Coast Guard rescues two men, dog
A Coast Guard helicopter crew rescued two missing men and their dog Saturday morning off the Core Sound banks near Atlantic.
The men left Atlantic at 10 a.m. Friday and planned to fish in the Core Sound area from Nelson Bay to Turnagain Bay aboard a 17-foot Galaxy craft boat, according to a press release from the Coast Guard.
The boat owner’s wife called Sector North Carolina watch standers for help Friday at 9:20 p.m., after the men did not return and could not be located.
The men were located just off core banks waving their arms for help, according to the press release.
Both men and their dog were hoisted into the helicopter in good condition and taken to Beaufort air field to meet their family.
Station Fort Macon and Station Hobucken rescue boats were involved in the search. Air Station Elizabeth City MH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crew, a Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point Pedro helicopter crew and Sea Level Fire and Rescue personnel also helped the search efforts.
