Easter ‘golfers’ miss cut
Trio charged with hitting golf balls into car windows
MOREHEAD CITY - Three Carteret County residents accused of a weekend crime spree that showered golf balls rather than Easter eggs around the county now face a list of charges for their alleged actions.
Residents from areas across the county woke up Easter Sunday and Monday to find the glass on their vehicles broken out and golf balls and metal balls left behind, according to the Carteret County Sheriff's Office.
Charged with the crime are William Lee Smith, 19, Bonnie Moran, 41, both of Morehead City, and Matthew Chisenhall, 18, of Newport, a news release said.
The three suspects were arrested by the sheriff's office Tuesday night and are accused of driving around the county and shooting the golf balls and metal balls with sling shots.
They were each charged with more than 20 counts of injury to property.
With the exception of two cases, authorities believe the victims were chosen at random, as the suspects drove through Brandywine, Sea Gate and other neighborhoods in the Newport, Mill Creek, and Morehead City areas during the overnight hours of Sunday and Monday.
The suspects were caught after video surveillance equipment captured them on camera, authorities said.
