Ten file for seats in Pamlico County

Sun Journal Staff

BAYBORO — Tuesday brought the largest daily filing turnout yet for the November general municipal elections in nine Pamlico County towns.

Ten candidates paid their $5 filing fee, all for commissioner seats in six towns. All but one filer was an incumbent.

Newcomer Harvey Hardison filed for one of five at-large seats on the Oriental town board.

Eber Warren and Larry “Pete” Whorton became the first filing candidates from Minnesott Beach.

Charles Brinson and Tommy Murray filed for re-election in Arapahoe.

Two Vandemere commissioners — Thomas Funn and David Howlett — also filed.

Funn, a former elected board member, was appointed to the board following the death of Mayor Henry P. Armond Jr. in April 2008. Commissioner Judy Thaanum was appointed mayor.

Other incumbents filing included Lester Carey and Maurice Benton in Stonewall and Alfred Cahoon in Grantsboro.

With 17 candidates filing this week, there are 21 undeclared elected seats remaining before the noon Friday deadline.
