Filing extended in Carteret

BEAUFORT — The filing period has been extended a week in Carteret County for two seats that had no candidates as the regular filing period for 2009 Municipal Elections came to a close Friday.

While there was a flurry of activity Friday as several candidates entered races in their respective towns, candidates were still needed for races in Peletier and Harkers Island as the noon deadline neared.

The Carteret County Board of Elections held an emergency meeting via telephone conference and agreed to extend the filing period for one commissioner for the Town of Peletier and one seat on the Harkers Island Sanitary District Board.

The extension included the remainder of the day on Friday and continues weekdays through noon on July 24.

The Town of Peletier has four seats up for election on its Board of Commissioners, with three candidates to date. Dale Sowers has filed for election to the mayor’s seat and sitting Commissioners Dan Taylor and Alice Dunn have filed.

Taylor is confident there will be a candidate to step up.

“If we’ve got a vacant position, the position will be filled,” he said.

The Peletier board has faced a number of changes lately.

Mayor Pro Tem Dave Holland stepped up to mayoral duties in the absence of longtime Mayor Walter Vinson, who has been on leave traveling. Now Holland will be moving to take on a new job, said Taylor.

In other municipal races, there was a mix of incumbents, former board members and newcomers to join in as filing in those races came to a close.

Ruth Barnes of Atlantic Beach will seek a return to the council seat in her town while former Beaufort mayor and commissioner Ann Carter will seek a return to the board there. Ed Book also filed as a candidate for commissioner in Beaufort.

Incumbent Cape Carteret Commissioner Dave Fowler filed for a re-election bid.

Scott Hatsell filed as a commissioner candidate in the Cedar Point race and Steve Blizzard joined the race for commissioner in Newport.
