Dickies 500 Notes & Quotes

NASCAR postrace rail

Dickies 500

Texas Motor Speedway

All about gasoline: One Busch brother ran out of gas. One didn’t. The one who didn’t, Kurt Busch, won the Dickies 500, and Kyle, who ran out of gas with the lead

Too bad to be true: Jimmie Johnson, who seemed to be cruising to a fourth straight championship, was an unwitting victim of Sam Hornish Jr.’s inability to keep his Dodge straight on the race’s third lap.

The demon fuel: As is often the case when fuel mileage plays a role in a race’s outcome, only five Chase drivers finished in the top 10. Kurt Busch was first, Denny Hamlin second, Mark Martin fourth, Tony Stewart sixth and Greg Biffle eighth.

Notable numbers

20 – Kurt Busch’s career Sprint Cup victories.

25.686 – The margin of victory.

73 – Johnson’s point lead.

111 – Johnson’s point loss.

Quotable quotes

“The possibility was out there that anything could happen, and it’s still out there. Anything – else – could still still happen.” – Jimmie Johnson (38th).

“We were pretty slow when we got there, but the car was good. We’d have finished third or fourth on performance, and while we finished third on fuel mileage, we still did as well as we should’ve, and I’m pretty pleased with that.” – Matt Kenseth.

“We were just junk the first half. … Somehow, it became a top-five car and stayed that way the last three runs.” – Mark Martin (fourth).

“This was a total missed opportunity that got away from us. We got our typical Texas race where we needed our spectacular Texas race like we got earlier.” – Jeff Gordon (13th).
