A Jacksonville man gunned down in front of his Shadowridge Road home last month helped one of the men charged in his death to start his own business, friends said.
Police charged Timothy Lacey and William Miguel Castro on Friday with murder in the Nov. 16 shooting death of 30-year-old Kevin Foley. Both are being held in the Onslow County Jail without bond.
Police have refused to answer questions about the relationship between Foley and his alleged killers. However, friends say Foley helped Lacey start his own car-detailing business.
Lacey’s MySpace account states his occupation is the owner of T-N-T Mobile Detail in Jacksonville.
Foley and Lacey, 28, were friends and no one The Daily News spoke with was surprised to see Lacey attend Foley’s funeral at Jones Funeral Home Nov. 19. They were shocked, however, with the announcement of Lacey’s arrest.
Members of Foley’s family previously told The Daily News that while he was a long-haul truck driver for Wheaton Van Lines, he loved cars and spent his spare time detailing his midnight blue Chevy Caprice.
A fellow Jacksonville High School graduate of Foley’s, Ulysses Lawrence, said he often worked on the Caprice with Foley, as recently as two weeks prior to his death.
The Caprice, which sat in Foley’s driveway in the rainy days after his death, is now gone and the residence appeared quiet Saturday afternoon.
Lacey has been in jail since Nov. 24 when he was charged by the Onslow County Sheriff’s Department with larceny, possession of stolen goods and obtaining property under false pretense. Those counts stem from a July situation in which Lacey allegedly stole jewelry from a girlfriend’s family and attempted to pawn the goods. Warrants state that Lacey had two unknown conspirators in the supposed theft.
Less clear is the nature of the relationship between Foley and Castro, the other man accused of killing him.
Friends of Foley’s interviewed by The Daily News said they had never seen Foley and Castro together.
Castro, 21, was developed as a suspect late in the investigation, said Chuck May, special agent-in-charge of the Carolinas Field Office of Naval Criminal Investigation Services.
Castro, a native of the U.S. Virgin Islands, is a Marine corporal assigned to Combat Logistics Regiment 27, 2nd Marine Logistics Group, aboard Camp Lejeune, base officials said.
Castro’s former wife and fellow Marine, Monique Yvonne Freeman, would not comment on the record as to whether she believed the charges against her ex-husband to be true.
Police said the investigation is ongoing.
