Breaking News: Wildire at Harlowe forces evacuations of several homes

HAVELOCK - An afternoon forest fire near Belangia Road in Harlowe was forcing the evacuations of several homes.

"There is a bad fire in Harlowe, and we are probably going to evacuate six to eight houses and anybody nearby who might have breathing difficulty because of the smoke," said Stanley Kite, Craven County Emergency Services director.

Kite said the fire was burning about 90 acres at  6 p.m. and is being fought by the N.C. Forestry Service.

Andy Meadows, the district forester, said the fire began about 4:30 p.m. Meadows did not say what started the fire.

"We're doing an initial attack on the fire right now," he said. "We've got trucks and helicopters out there trying to get a line around the fire."
