Profile: New Hanover Regional Medical Center
New Hanover Regional Medical Center includes the main campus, which is a tertiary referral center, Cape Fear Hospital, Pender Memorial Hospital, the NHRMC Rehabilitation Hospital, The Oaks Behavioral Health Hospital and New Hanover Regional Emergency Medical Services. It is the ninth-largest health care system in the state, with a dedicated team of 4,600 employees, 500 physicians and 750 volunteers.
New Hanover Regional was named a "Magnet Hospital" in June, 2003, becoming just the 70th hospital to earn the designation. The Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence is the"gold standard" of nursing care; the highest recognition awarded by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
New Hanover Regional Medical Center New Hanover Regional Medical Center (NHRMC) is a 506-bed teaching hospital and regional referral center. It offers many services that can't be found in smaller area hospitals, including open heart surgery and a comprehensive cardiac program, a vascular operating room, trauma care, neonatal intensive care, inpatient pediatrics services, cancer care and other specialties.
Cape Fear Hospital
Cape Fear Hospital is a community hospital licensed for 141 beds. It offers a range of services includinga specialized orthopedics center, 24-hour emergency department, outpatient surgery and endoscopy.
The Oaks Behavioral Health Hospital
Individualized care and attention are the hallmarks of The Oaks, a 62-bed psychiatric hospital on thecampus of NHRMC. The Oaks provides inpatient and outpatient programs for adults with an acute unit for patients requiring more intensive observation and an assisted care unit for those needing a combination of medical and psychiatric treatment.
Rehabilitation Hospital and Services
Rehabilitation Services includes a 60-bed inpatient rehabilitation hospital, day hospital and outpatient therapies for adults and children. Independence Rehabilitation and Oleander Rehabilitation are outpatient sites providing comprehensive rehab forback and joint therapy.
New Hanover Regional Emergency Medical Services
The state's first "model" EMS system, New Hanover Regional EMS operates a fleet of 12 ambulances in New Hanover County. The network operates AirLink, the region's air ambulance service, and VitaLink, a mobile intensive care transport service. VitaLine a free, 24-hour-a-day health information service, with registered nurses who provide prompt, confidential answers to health care questions, physician referral, and information about support groups. Trauma Services
NHRMC is a state-designated Level II Trauma Center, which is a facility that can manage, on a 24 hour basis, severely injuredor critically ill patients or those at risk for severe injury. The level II designation refers to the availability of surgeons around the clock.
Cancer Services
New Hanover Regional's cancer program has beennationally designated as a Cancer Teaching Hospital Program. Its Zimmer Cancer Center combines outpatient treatment so patients can access the care they need in one convenient and comforting place, including radiation therapy and chemotherapy. The center also houses New Hanover Regional's clinical trials program, giving local residents a chance to participate in national treatment studies. For cancer patients whomust be hospitalized, New Hanover Regional offers a 22-bed unit with laundry and kitchen areas designed to help patients and their families cope with longstays.
Heart Services
The Heart Center at New Hanover Regional was named as a Blue Cross/Blue Shield Cardiac Center of excellence in 2006. The Center offers extensive medical cardiac services, including more than 16,000 cardiac procedures performed annually and the area's only open heart surgery program, a cardiovascular laboratory for non-invasive monitoring of heart rhythms, a chest pain center, cardiac catheterization laboratories and an electrophysiology lab for the diagnosis and treatment of heart and coronary artery disease. Medical treatment of heart disease is provided in the Cardiac Care Unit and Medical Telemetry Unit. The center also includes the Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, which offers classes on diet and stress management, as well as exercise classes monitored by registered nurses and exercise physiologists.
Women's and Children's Services
New Hanover Regional Medical Center opened the Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital in August 2008. The hospital features all-private rooms with plenty of room for the patient and family. The hospital offers obstetrical care for routine and high-risk deliveries. The unit handles about 4,000 births each year. Other services include the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit that cares for babies born premature or critically ill. The Betty H. Cameron Women's and Children's Hospital also has pediatric inpatient and intensive care services as well as outpatient pediatric specialty services.
Orthopedic Services
The Orthopedic Specialty Center is based at Cape Fear Hospital. The Center recently received national recognition for being among the top 10% of Orthopedic Centers. Joint Camp is offered to patients receiving hip or knee replacement.This service helps patients recover mobility more rapidly in a comfortable, camp-like setting.
Surgical Pavilion
New Hanover Regional Medical Center's Surgical Pavilion combines access to highly advanced equipment and experienced specialists in a convenient and comfortable setting. The building opened in June 2008. Parking and registration are available right at the building and patient pre-op and post-op rooms allow for the patient and family to wait and recover in privacy and comfort.
Imaging Services
NHRMC's Imaging Services include a PET/ CT scan for diagnosis of Cancer and Alzheimers disease. The medical center has the newest open bore MRI, capable of accommodating patients up to 450 lb, and decreasing the incidence of claustrophobia for most patients, while providing physicians with high quality readings. The recent addition of a 64 slice CT also helps improve diagnostic imaging services. Interventional Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, CT, Ultrasound, Mammography are also offered to provide residents with advanced diagnosis and treatments close to home.
