Woman killed in hit-and-run identified
Jacksonville police have identified the woman killed in a hit and run Tuesday morning on U.S. 17.
Barbara Jean Elwell, 41, of Jacksonville, was found dead in the road at 2:55 a.m. by a patrol officer.
Authorities are still looking for the vehicle they say was involved in the incident.
Police believe the vehicle that struck the woman is either a 1999 to 2002 Chevrolet Silverado or a 2000 to 2003 Chevrolet Tahoe or Suburban. The vehicle will have damage to the chrome grill and will be missing the gold Chevrolet emblem from the front grill.
Elwell was last seen in the area of the Triangle Motor Inn prior to the hit and run, said Sgt. Chuck James with the Jacksonville Police Department.
Crime Stoppers of Onslow County is offering a reward of up to $2,500 for information leading to an arrest or apprehension in the case.
