Chronic Pain Management

It has been estimated that a third of all Americans, around 50 million people,

suffer from some type of chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as any pain that lasts longer than the usual recovery

time for an injury or illness and

takes many forms. The patient may be diagnosed with fibromyalgia, arthritis, low

back pain, repetitive strain

injuries, RSD, or one of many other conditions that are associated with chronic

pain. Not only does chronic pain

affect the patient, making it very difficult for him or her to participate in

even the most basic daily activities; it also

affects those around the patient, their families, friends, and associates.

At Crystal Coast Therapy, they have therapists who specialize in the treatment

of chronic and acute pain, in addition

to many other illnesses, conditions, and injuries. They have an on-site warm water

pool (96 degrees) that has

been very beneficial to numerous people suffering from chronic pain. Patients

with chronic pain find it much easier

to tolerate activities in the warm water pool, as they are able to move in a gravity-reduced

environment. The

warm water helps to loosen up chronic muscle tension and inflamed joints, while

the resistance of the water

improves overall strength and balance. This is the ideal setting for anyone demonstrating

not only chronic pain,

but also weakness, gait instability, decreased balance, lymphedema, or obesity.

A typical treatment regimen would not only include participation in aquatic therapy,

but eventual return to clinic

and home land-based exercises. Crystal Coat Therapy also features an on-site gym

containing therapy equipment

required to improve strength and balance. In addition to the pool and gym, their

physical and occupational therapists

have extensive training and experience with the latest modalities to treat chronic

pain including ultrasound,

iontophoresis, and electro-therapeutic point stimulation (ETPS), to name a few.

When used in conjuction with

aquatic or traditional exercise and therapy, these modalities have been demonstrated

to help the patient return to

their daily lives with less pain.

If you would like any information about these, or any of the other programs at

Crystal Coast Therapy, including

their lymphedema, cancer rehabilitation, or home health programs, please do not

hesitate to contact them at 252-

638-7875. You may also stop by their clinic, which is located directly across

Neuse Blvd., from the New Bern Fire

Department.
