Barry has moved on, leaving most of us a much needed couple inches of rain. The water has finally cleared and the fishing, such as it is, is back to normal. The Spanish bite has been good to very good some days, other days it’s hard to scare up a respectable mackerel. Fish are being caught in 20 to 40-feet of water all along the beach, with the best locations near the inlets. Particularly, Cape Lookout shoals have produced, the areas west of Beaufort Inlet and Bogue Inlet from Bogue Pier, to the Sea Buoy and from the Sea Buoy along the front of Bear Island. I’ve heard of some big fish landed and lost too. Trolling has worked well with small Clark Spoons, but if you get into the Spanish, just stop and throw to them with Stingsilvers, flies or other small shiny baits. Sure more fun than trolling.
As always, the blues will be in the mix too. Spanish bite on the piers and surf have been erratic and mostly slow and disappointing, although some nice pier catches on Oceanana Pier.
Flounder are finally making a move, with good catches on the reefs, but also fish around and inside the inlets and on the piers and along the grass marsh areas of the sound and ICW docks. Slow grubs have worked best, as live bait is still hard to come by other than killifish and mud minnows. Off the beach, the best floundering is still over the wrecks, reefs and nearshore rocks. AR 315 is producing some citation fish, as well as the live bottom reefs too. Good locations will be AR 320, 342, 345 and a little farther out AR 330. Work the concrete rubble and pipes.
The surf has produced blues, both big and small, with the Hatteras blues still biting on the piers too as well as inside the inlets. There were several Spanish caught at the Point too, the biggest 18-inches by Mr. Bil. By the way, the fish police have been out along the beach checking fishing licenses and measuring flounder too. Remember it’s 14-inches inside and 14.5-inches in the ocean, but around the inlets, be careful, it’s hard to tell what is inside and outside, and where you are changes if you walk or drift, and the regulation is by POSSESSION, i.e., where you possess the fish is presumed to be where you caught it. For me it’s 14.5-inches unless I’m in Bogue Sound proper.
The Emerald Isle surf has also finally yielded a to me some nice redfish action. On Saturday, just prior to the arrival of TS Barry, I hooked into and released a 29-inch drum, and lost another on a Kastmaster. Fish were in close, very-very close in the backwash; in fact I thought I was hung on that sandy lip of the beach before I realized it was a drum going the other way. Needless to say, being primed by Saturday’s success, I ventured out in the Sunday wet and wild, both morning and afternoon on the incoming and then the outgoing tide to look for more. Sure the conditions were “drum” perfect, but no fish, just WET! Drum have continued to be caught all week, I saw several nice ones and landed a 21-inch slot fish early in the week. Cut bait has been best, although gold Kastmasters have caught some fish too. Today however I got skunked on live bait, killifish, spots and pinfish, all died on the hook from old age, not a hit all morning!!!
The cobia action has slowed a bit, with Rough Point at the west end of the Shaq, still producing nice fish. Interestingly, sightings around the piers are still numerous, especially for small cobia. By small, I mean you better measure them before it goes into the box. Remember, they have a bag limit of two per day and a 33-inch minimum, fork-length measurement.
Trout are still biting. I have heard of some recent catches in Broad Creek, in the Haystacks and also both grays and specks near the Coast Guard Station, inside of Beaufort Inlet. There were also a few sea mullet there too. Interestingly, there have been some trout around the EI Point, I saw a small keeper and a former Dr. Bogus graduate landed a citation 5.5-pounder from the ocean side of the point in EI on Wed. bouncing a ShrimPoster for bait. Nice going Trey!
UPDATE/Capt. Rick Patterson (Cape Crusader, inshorefishing1@yahoo.com) The redfish have been on fire. We have had some awesome top water action for the past couple of weeks. This has been some of the biggest reds that I have seen in the marsh (Haystacks). Fish are ranging for the mid to upper slot and over 30 inches. Speckled trout are still scattered around. We usually get a few on each trip. One day we slay them the next only a few. The sheepshead action has picked up the past week. I hear they are at the White Oak River Bridge thick right now. We have not been fishing the ocean lately; the redfish action has been too hot. The Onslow Bay Saltwater Fishing Club is having a redfish tournament on June 23 out of Casper's Marina. They are hoping to make it a series next year. ([ http://www.obsfc.us/ ]http://www.obsfc.us/)
NEARSHORE UPDATE: Kings are as close as AR 345 and NW Places. Sea bass (now at a 12-inch minimum), up to 16-inches are being caught from Station Rock to Southeast Bottoms. Speaking of SEB, dolphin have been caught just offshore if the Bottoms, about 12-miles out. Spanish have been biting well just outside of Bogue Inlet at the Sea Buoy and as close in at 10-feet of water are producing 1 to 2-pound fish.
Pier Update: Oceanana-Flounder, blues and Spanish. Bogue Pier-Blues (many on bottom rigs), scattered Spanish, few flounder and sea mullet and occasional nice catches of pompano and a few trout. Seaview-Spanish, blues flounder but no keepers, 1-king on Wed. and lost a tarpon estimated at 100-pounds, today. Surf City-Blues great all day, flounder early in the morning and a 7-pound king. Jolly Roger, no kings this week, blues, Spanish, pompano and small flounder.
Catch of the week, was no doubt the swordfish landed aboard the “Second to None”, captained by Shane Brafford. What a surprise, congrats Shane!
Finally, the North Carolina Aquarium at Pine Knoll Shores invites novice fishermen to learn how to cast and reel in some big ones with the “Beginners Only” seminar on Wednesday, June 13, at 1 p.m., with Jeff McBane. And on Saturday, July 21, at 1 p.m., Gary Berti of Trout Unlimited and the Triangle Fly Fishers club will cover fly-fishing, coldwater conservation and fly-tying demonstrations.
