Man injures himself, blames drive-by shooting

A Vandemere man accidentally shot himself while handling a gun Tuesday night.

The man, whose name was not released, sought treatment at an urgent care center, where he told employees he was the victim of a drive-by shooting, according to Pamlico County investigators.

Sheriff Bill Sawyer said the accidental shooting happened around 7 p.m. on N.C. 304.

“The man didn’t call law enforcement,” he said.

The sheriff said the truth came out after an investigation.

“He didn’t file a false report to law enforcement, he just told the people at the clinic he was a victim of a drive-by shooting. He will not be charged.”
