MMM hosts story time

The Missiles and More Museumm along with Topsail Beach will present "Stories and More" at 2 p.m. today and again on June 25 at the Assembly Building. The event is open to children ages 5-8 years. For more information or to make reservations, call 910-328-2488.

NARFEA meets today

The local chapter of the National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association will meet  at 11:30 a.m. today at the Golden Corral on U.S. 17. Guest speaker will be David Stokes. The group will not hold meetings in July or August. For more information, call 910-346-2472.

Portrait of former district attorney to be dedicated

A portrait of Walter Thomson Britt, a former district attorney, will be dedicated during a special ceremony Thursday at the Sampson County Courthouse, according to information from District Attorney Dewey Hudson.

Britt was a Sampson County native and District Attorney from 1949 to 1975, during which his district included Duplin, Lenoir, Onslow and Sampson counties.

The ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. in the Superior Courtroom.

Take a hike

Head over to Fort Macon State Park for a beach hike on Thursday. Meet at the parking lot 10 a.m.  for the hike which will teach participants more about the natural and cultural history of the area. For more information, call 252-726-3775.

SSA open today

The Social Secutiy Administration office is scheduled to be open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. today  and June 25 at 604 College Street. It will close for lunch. For more information, call 800-772-1213.

Youth Empowerment Day

Saunders Funeral Home sponsors a Youth Empowerment event "Saving Our Youth" from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 13 at Belgrade Community Pavilion located in Belgrade Community in Maysville. A day of fun and awareness with hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, soda and volleyball. All ages are welcome to attend and free of charge. A Jump-A-Room, door prizes and basketball also. Farmers Market

Onslow County Farmers Market will hold its fourth annual grand opening this Saturday, June 13, from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm at its 4024 Richlands Highway market site, located next door to the County Complex Center. Ceremony begins at 9 am. Come join the NC Watermelon Queen Leslie Revelle for a watermelon seed spitting and eating contest, a petting zoo, hay rides, and live music. Antique tractors, a fire engine and a operating old fashion grits mill on site and its all free.
