New Bern Young Marines named unit of the year

The New Bern Young Marines Unit was chartered on May 30, 2003 by National Headquarters, Young Marines.  The unit consists of youth from the elementary, middle, and high schools of the surrounding communities. The unit currently has 30 Young Marines.   Since the unit has been formed the Young Marines performance has inspired the youth our communities.  The community has seen the unit perform in many events inside and outside the city of New Bern.

I am extremely proud of the incredible accomplishments the unit have achieved since becoming apart of the Young Marine family.

The unit has participated in all Battalion encampments and has taken 1st Place in events such as Color Guard competition, Drill competition, and Tug of War.

The unit has been selected as the 2nd Battalion Unit of the Year and 1st Regiment Unit of the Year for 2008.

The unit has participated in all Regimental encampments and has taken 1st Place in events such as Color Guard competition, Relay races, and Tug of War.

The New Bern Young Marines have participated in the Veterans Appreciation Week campaign every year since the unit has been chartered.

The unit has the pleasure of assisting with the placement of the American flag on every grave marker of our National Cemetery as we celebrate Memorial Day each year.

A large role for the New Bern Young Marines is the participation in the local parades and functions as a Color Guard and marching unit.  The unit has provided a Color Guard for parades such as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.; Saint Patrick's Day; Shiners parade; Christmas parade; and Veterans Day Parade.  The unit also provides the Color Guard and flag detail for the New Bern Police Department's Annual Awards Ball, the Second Battalion Young Marine Ball and the Regimental Young Marine Ball.

The unit receives instructions and presentations from the Narcotics unit of the New Bern Police department to help fulfill the quarterly requirement for Drug Demand Reduction Training.

As part of the community service projects the unit provides service to the Annual MumFest, National Night Out, Toys for Tots, Emergency Disaster Drill,   The unit also conducts flag destruction ceremonies with the local Elks Lodge each Flag Day.

The New Bern Young Marines have taken unit trips to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina, Washington DC, and the National Museum of the Marine Corps.

The unit was selected as the North Carolina Regiment Unit of the Year in November 2008.
