Gusts cause cancellation of additional flights at airport
Additional flights out of Coastal Carolina Regional Airport have been canceled because of continuous wind gusts in the New Bern area.
U.S. Airways canceled 11:03 a.m. and 12:43 p.m. flights to Charlotte, and Delta canceled a 2:45 flight to Atlanta, said Tom Braaten, the airport director.
"Our next scheduled flight is a 2:35 to Charlotte with U.S. Air," Braaten said. "We're hopeful the wind is going to let us do that."
Officials decided to close the airport terminal after 5 p.m. Friday, and several flights were canceled Friday night and this morning.
Tropical storm Hanna made landfall near the North Carolina and South Carolina border about 3:20 this morning, with 70-mph maximum winds. The airport had a 51-mph gust about 6:30, said Jim Merrell, a forecaster with the National Weather Service in Newport.
The center of the storm traveled north through the Goldsboro area and along Interstate 95. At 11:30, the storm had 50-mph maximum winds, and the center was near Emporia in southeastern Virginia.
