HAVELOCK — A seven-month drug investigation involving city, state and federal authorities netted 14 arrests Wednesday of Havelock-area residents on 51 charges.
The arrests have been described as the first phase of an investigation involving cocaine, marijuana, prescription drugs and firearms.
“I think it will have an impact; however it’s just a drop in the bucket,” Havelock Police Chief G. Wayne Cyrus said in an interview. “We’re just scratching the surface. I truly believe that it will have some impact.”
According to the release, Havelock undercover investigators purchased controlled substances, including crack cocaine, powder cocaine and marijuana. One individual was charged with attempting to sell counterfeit drugs.
“If an individual attempts to pass a substance as another substance, for instance, baking soda for cocaine, then that constitutes a counterfeit substance charge,” Cyrus said.
Investigators also seized property such as televisions, GPS units and PlayStation gaming equipment that had been taken from residences in the Havelock area.
“The information we developed during the drug investigation led us to be able to recover some of those stolen items,” Cyrus said. “We’re still doing some work on that aspect of it.”
Havelock Police will be working with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms to determine if there are any violations relative to seized firearms.
Cyrus said the investigation is not over.
“There is a possibility that we’re going to have some additional arrests at a later time,” he said.
