Bayside open for business
The Bayside Restaurant in Havelock opened at 6 a.m. today and is back in business.
The restaurant at 700 East Main St. had been closed since Oct. 26 when a man who police said was upset about a woman plowed his car through the front part of the building.
Employees, volunteers and the owners of the business have been working to clean up the business, make repairs and get it back open.
Donnavan Kendell Yates, 23, of Newport, drove his Ford Escort through the brick facade of the building around 4 a.m. Oct. 26. He has been charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon inflicting serious injury, two counts of assault with a deadly weapon, injury to real property and reckless endangerment. He is scheduled to make a court appearance on Nov. 17.
Repairs required carpenters, contractors, painters and bricklayers.
John Curtis Adams, night manager at the restaurant, had no estimate on how much damage was done to the building but was working through a lawyer and insurance companies to get the finances of the repairs straightened out.
He said the business was forced to throw away about $12,000 worth of food because of possible contamination from all the dust and debris caused when the car crashed through the building.
