Beaufort County man struck on U.S. 70

A Beaufort County man remained in Pitt County Memorial Hospital on Sunday evening being treated for serious injuries he received when he was hit by a car in New Bern early Sunday morning.

Ronriquez Flowers, 21, of Washington, was struck by a minivan traveling on U.S. 70 East between the Trent Road overpass and Pembroke exit. The accident occurred about 1 a.m. Sunday, said Beth Stevenson, spokesman for New Bern Police Department.

The New Bern Police Traffic Enforcement Unit is continuing its investigation of the incident to which a New Bern EMS ambulance responded first to the scene and then called for East Care to airlift Ronriquez to Pitt Memorial, she said.

"Witnesses say he was in the middle of the road when he was hit," Stevenson said.

The man was struck by a 2004 Honda Odyssey being driven by Kathy Schmidt of New Bern, she said. No charges have been filed pending a complete investigation.
