Two caught in roofing scam

Two Craven County residents were arrested by New Bern police in connection with a roofing/construction scam that police say is aimed at the elderly.

Lloyd Petten, 22, and Joy Petten, 34, both of 113 Pettiford Lane, were arrested Tuesday by New Bern police.

Both were charged with conspiracy and obtaining property under false pretense.

Each was jailed with bail set at $15,000.

New Bern police are requesting assistance from citizens in identifying possible victims in the scam that targets the elderly. The Pettens were arrested on April 25 and June 1 on similar charges.

Police say the two use several business names, including J&L Roofing and Pro-tech Roofing.

“The Pettens routinely target the elderly and have numerous cases pending. Several law enforcement agencies are involved with those pending cases, according to New Bern Deputy Police Chief Ed Preston.

Any citizen thought to have been victimized by the two are asked to call New Bern police at 252-633-2020 or their local law enforcement agency.
