Boy Scouts to launch regional food drive on Saturday

The East Carolina Council for Boy Scouts of America kicks off its largest service project, “Scouting for Food,” on Saturday.

The project is a food drive involving thousands of Scouts and adult volunteers across 21 counties in Eastern North Carolina. Scouts will collect and distribute more than 80,000 pounds of food to local community or church pantries.

Beginning Saturday, Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts and Venturers will place yellow door hangers on homes. The scouts will return to pick up donated bags of food in the morning on the following Saturday. All donations should be placed out for pick-up before 9 a.m on Feb. 11.

Donations needed include canned items such as vegetables, meats, chili, soups or juices and baby formula. Boxed or bagged meals and pastas are also welcome.

The scouts are asking that no perishable, frozen or glass-packaged goods be included, and they cannot accept monetary donations.
