One shot, four arrested following attempted break-in

A shotgun blast that hit a man in the arm halted a group of men trying to break into a Sneads Ferry home after one of them had been kicked out by the owner early Monday morning, authorities said.

Cyle Norris, 18, was hit in the right forearm with No. 7 shot from a 12-gauge shotgun fired by Landon Crews after authorities said Norris and three other men were trying to break into Crews' home.

Norris; Joseph Michael Greene III, 16; Trevor Sturgis, 21; and David Sonye, 21; were each charged by the Onslow County Sheriff's Department with first-degree burglary, possession of burglary tools and conspiracy. Their bonds were set at $50,000 each.

Greene was visiting Crews' house on Crows Nest Lane when at around 1 a.m. he "became very violent to the extent the owner of the home had to put him out by force," said Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown.

Greene broke out a glass in the front door before he departed, and approximately 20 minutes later he returned with Sturgis, Sonye, and Norris. They tried to break into the house by kicking in the door, authorities said.

When they could not break the door down, they attempted to break out windows.

Crews was in the home with his mother. He told investigators that he warned the men trying to break into his home several times while his mother was calling 911.

He said he shot once at someone who was coming into the house through a broken window.

"After the first and only shot the suspects fled the area," Brown said.

Sonye was convicted in 2004 of breaking and entering and assault, according to the N.C. Department of Correction.

More charges in the case are pending, Brown said.
