Up to eight new camp sites created
The Neuseway Nature Center campground will have additional camp sites for the public this year.
Lenoir County Parks and Recreation Director Bill Ellis said this week that $25,000 will be used to add nearly 10 new camp sites at the campground.
Work crews began adding the new sites Monday afternoon. Ellis said the new sites should accomadate the campground's growth needs. Once the sites are added, the campground will have 24 total camp sites.
Lenoir County Economic Development Director Mark Pope said the campground is a piece the area's economic puzzle. Recently, the campground began advertising in national camping magazines.
Ellis said the campground has seen more visitors nationwide stay at the campground. Additional camp sites could be added in the future. Preliminary discussions are underway to add up to 40 new camp sites on 6 acres of land near the site as well.
If the 40 sites are built, they would not impact the walking trails located behind the existing campground site. Elllis said the property where the additional sites could be built was the former Burkett property.
