Marine casualty identified

A Marine killed Thursday in Afghanistan was in his second deployment, according to 2nd Marine Division spokesman Maj. Cliff Gilmore.

Lance Cpl. Charles S. Sharp, 20, of Adairsville, Ga., died while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was a machine gun section leader assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force.

Sharp joined the Marine Corps September 20, 2006 and was promoted to lance corporal. June 1, 2007, Gilmore said.

He deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom from October 2007 to May 2008 and to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in May 2009, according to Gilmore. His awards include the Navy Unit Commendation, National Defense Service Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment ribbon.
