Vikings defeat Clinton, 83-52; will play title game next Saturday in Raleigh
GREENVILLE – For the third time in four years, the Kinston High School boys’ basketball team will be playing for a state championship.
The 2008 3A state champion Vikings defeated Clinton in the North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2A East regional finals, 83-52 on Saturday, to advance to next week’s title game.
That contest will be held at N.C. State University’s Reynolds Coliseum at 2:30 p.m. March 13 against West Caldwell or Sylva Smoky Mountain.
“We were able to make some plays tonight,” said Kinston head coach Wells Gulledge. “I’m very proud of this group right here.”
The Vikings won the 2008 3A championship by defeating Trinity. They also played for the 3A state title in 2007, but lost to Concord in the championship game.
McDonald’s All American and University of North Carolina signee Reggie Bullock earned regional Most Valuable Player honors after scoring 29 points and recording 10 rebounds and six assists on Saturday. Bullock was aided by fellow seniors Dory Hines (20 points, six assists), Josh Benoit (17 points, three steals) and Dallas Best (nine points, four steals).
Hines and Benoit joined Bullock on the all-region team.
