Considering couples dancing, yogalates, belly dancing or zumba classes?
All can be explored at the 4th annual Surf City Women’s Expo Saturday.
For a $3 admission fee — which benefits Surf City’s children’s programs and 4 C’s Holiday Assistance Program — attendees of the expo will be able to spend a few hours being pampered, shopping and collecting a variety of information on everything from health to home improvement.
“We’re looking for (ladies) to come and hang out with their friends — take a few hours and do something for themselves,” said Denise Rossi, with Surf City Parks and Recreation, and one of the organizers of the annual event.
Davis Canady, a 16-year dance instructor who runs Social Graces, teaches couples dancing: ballroom, shag, country western and Latin. He will begin offering dance classes every Thursday night at Surf City Community Center. He plans to be at the expo to share the benefits of and answer questions about dance
“It improves posture, social skills … helps with confidence,” he said, touting the benefits of dance. “It’s great exercise … and you can take it with you wherever you go in the world.”
Other community center instructors will also be on hand teaching belly dance, zumba, yogalates, cardio and watercolor.
“The people teaching our classes are a lot of fun to be around — very energetic,” Rossi said, adding that classes at the community center are not limited to Surf City residents.
Besides instructors there are a variety of other offerings at the expo, everything from “baubles, bangles and beads to bumblebees,” said Kristie Grubb, the director of Surf City Parks and Recreation.
“I think it’s the largest variety of businesses we’ve ever had,” she said. “We have about 55 different booths — at most five that are similar and no repeat businesses. There will be chair massages, information on spa treatments, new hairstyles and makeup.”
The vendors will offer some freebies, and each has donated a door prize. Each attendee receives a ticket with admission and additional tickets can be purchased for the drawings.
The expo will be held at Surf City Community Center, located at 201 Community Center Drive off J.H. Batts Road, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.
