Two dead in separate wrecks over weekend

Freedom ENC

A Wilson woman is dead and two men are hospitalized after a Sunday wreck in Carteret County, according to the N.C. Highway Patrol.

Barbara Lynn Mazza, 62, of Waterford Drive in Wilson, was pronounced dead at the scene after the 2005 Chevrolet Suburban she and her husband, Charles Mazza, 66, were traveling in was struck by a 1995 Acura, driven by William Troy Cooper, 18, of Hadnot Drive in Swansboro, said Trooper D.L. Clifton.

Cooper was driving north on N.C. 58, just north of the Silver Creek golf course near Cape Carteret, when he crossed the center line and struck the Suburban, Clifton said.

"We had the speed of impact was about 65 miles per hour," Clifton said.

The speed limit in the area of the crash is 55 mph.

Cooper and Charles Mazza were both airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville by EastCare. Clifton said Cooper was in critical condition and Mazza was in stable condition.

Charges have not yet been filed but they are waiting for blood test results, Clifton said. Unprescriped Zantax and marijuana were found in the front pocket of Cooper's shorts, he said.

The wreck came two days after a Newport man was killed in a single-car wreck near his home.

Charles Titus Jordan, 41, of Bogue Loop Road, was driving a 1992 Chevrolet SUV on Bogue Loop Road when he crossed the centerline, over corrected, ran back off the road to the right and overturned several times, Clifton said.

"He was traveling 75 in a 45 (mph zone)," Clifton said.

Jordan was pronounced dead at the scene, which was "pretty close" to his home, Clifton said.

According to the Highway Patrol, alcohol was a factor in the crash, which took place at about 7:20 a.m.
