Collision with garbage truck kills woman

The identity of a woman killed in a vehicle crash Thursday on N.C. 55 in Pamlico County has been released by the State Highway Patrol.

She is Estelle Dixon Hodges, 80, of 1507 Old Bay River Road, Alliance.

Patrol 1st Sgt. Kevin Rock said the woman was traveling east on N.C. 55 when she was hit by a garbage truck. Rock said the garbage truck, owned by Waste Industries and driven by Swannie Neal Felton, 64, of Newport, was attempting to make a left hand turn on N.C. 55 to travel west.

"The truck turned into the vehicle driven by the woman," Rock said.

Hodges was driving a 2000 Chevrolet sport utility vehicle.

The 6 p.m. crash happened near the Moose Lodge in Pamlico County.

The woman was transported by ambulance to CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, where she was pronounced dead.

Rock said drugs and alcohol were not contributing factors in the crash.

He said the facts would be taken to the Craven County District Attorney to decide what charges will be filed.

Rock reminds motorists to allow a safe driving distance, do not speed, and do not drink and drive.

"If you must drink, have a designated driver," he said.

The highway patrol will be monitoring motorists' speed on U.S. 70 and will have DWI checkpoints during the holiday weekend.
