Area singers win chance in contest

From staff reports

On Saturday, three girls from Eastern North Carolina won a chance to sing at an "American Idol"-style competition in July at Union Point Park.

Katrina Harris, 15, of New Bern; MacKenzie Roberts, 15, of Greenville; and April Spears, 16, of Jamesville defeated seven other girls in the second round of "New Bern Idol." The competition was held at "Bernaroo," a music festival sponsored by the city's parks and recreation department.

The parks department has sponsored the "New Bern Idol" competition this spring in an effort to provide more activities for teenagers. The first round of the competition was May 17. Judges picked 10 winners out of 20 people who auditioned.

Saturday's winners will sing at 6 p.m. July 11 at the gazebo in the park. The girl who wins the competition will receive a cash prize. The amount of the prize is undetermined.
