Six bands to perform at concert in the park
Teenage volunteers, a downtown music store and the city's recreation department will present a concert Saturday at Union Point Park.
Six bands will perform at "Bernaroo," a spin-off of a Tennessee concert series called "Bonaroo." The concert will begin at 1 p.m. and end about 10.
It is organized by Doug Merrill, who owns the Music Box; Young Adults Active in the Community, a parks and recreation group; and a student musicians and songwriters club.
Tickets are $4 per person. Children 5 and younger enter free.
"Half the proceeds go to the ‘Save Darfur' project," said Nicole Dewar, a programs director with parks and recreation. "We wanted to do something to help a group, and that's the group we chose."
Pollock Street Band, Next of Kin, Adonis, Concrete Sky, Painted Man and a student musicians and songwriters club will perform at the concert.
The 10 contestants of "New Bern Idol," a spin-off of Fox's "American Idol," will perform from 1:50 to 4:05.
Dewar said the park will be closed to cars during the concert. She said alcohol is not allowed in the park. A vendor will sell food during the show.
Dewar said people can call her at 639-2902 for more information about the concert.
