One charged with manufacturing meth

Freedom ENC

A Craven County man is behind bars after deputies found a suspected methamphetamine lab in his garage.

Craven County deputies Sgt. Mickey Tillman and J. Raynor of the narcotics unit arrived at Shannon Duel Tew's home at 101 Cutter's Way outside Havelock around 3:30 p.m. to serve an arrest warrant.

Tew, 37, was being served a warrant for purchasing more sudafedrin than allowed in a month, deputies say.

Capt. Joe Heckman said the deputies looked in the garage and Tew gave them permission to go inside.

"The deputies found an amount of sudafedrin in the garage. The sudafedrin is a precursor for manufacturing meth," Hickman said.

The deputies continued their investigation and called the State Bureau of Investigation to examine the lab.

Deputies took Tew into custody.

Tew was arrested and charged with manufacturing methamphetamine and the possession of the precursor of manufacturing meth, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Tew was put in the Craven County jail with bail set at $10,000.

The lab was not operating, and no one was injured.

Several months ago, deputy Chris Drake was injured when he and his deputy dog investigated a meth lab off U.S. 70. Drake was overcome by fumes.
