Woman was struck by van in 2005
Survivors of a 56-year-old blind pedestrian who died when she was struck by a CARTS van two years ago are suing Craven County.
A suit seeking unspecified damages for the estate of Brandy Prince as a result of her wrongful death was filed in Craven County Superior Court by estate administrator William H. Hollows.
It names then CARTS driver Samuel Pompy, Craven County, and Craven County Rural Transit doing business as CARTS in the suit.
Prince was walking across the entrance driveway to the Craven County Health Department and Department of Social Services along Neuse Boulevard on April 19, 2005 when the CARTS van driven by Pompy turned and struck her.
She was taken immediately to Craven Regional Medical Center and then airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where she later died.
Police said Prince was walking with a cane appropriately facing traffic, and Pompy, 52, was charged with misdemeanor death by motor vehicle in connection with the incident.
It was the first fatality involving a county vehicle in the 25-van fleet that is self-insured for collision and carries liability insurance through the N.C. Association of County Commissioners.
