Harmony Hall open house to show Christmas decorations
It’s beginning to look a lot more like Christmas at Harmony Hall this week as the historic house’s decorations are completed.
Nearly 20 women from the Dirt Daubers Garden Club helped decorate the house built in 1772 by Jesse Cobb. Brenda Jones, club president, worked to have the decorations done before the house’s open house on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
A Christmas tree was recently delivered to Harmony Hall and will be decorated today by the Lenoir County Master Gardner Club and the Lenoir County Cooperative Extension Service. Jones said she has helped decorate Harmony Hall for the past four years.
“We used live greenery to decorate the house like they did during the colonial period,” Jones said. “They used to cut greenery from the yard to decorate.”
Pat Sargeant was among those who helped decorate Wednesday.
“It’s fun using what we know to decorate and arrange,” Sargeant said. “People like to tour historical places during the Christmas season.”
Harmony Hall housed the offices of James Glasgow, secretary of state, until 1781. During the Revolutionary War, Harmony Hall was owned by Richard Caswell, first elected governor of North Carolina.
The house was also the site of a Civil War hospital. It was remodeled in 1790, 1835 and in 1984. Harmony Hall is at 109 E. King St. For more information about the house, call 252-522-0421.
