Editor's note: This article was updated to add Piner's party affiliation.
A Sneads Ferry resident announced Friday he intends to run for the Republican nomination for the 3rd District Congressional seat.
“I really hope to do something with this campaign because I feel I am very knowledgeable about the U.S. Constitution and what’s going on in the world today,” Sperby Piner said.
Piner, 62, was born in Sneads Ferry and is retired from the telecommunications industry. Piner, who said he has never run for office, has been heading up a local campaign to rid Sneads Ferry of litter and is presently the local point of contact for the N.C. Adopt-a-Highway program.
He said he will run solely on the issues, including debt accumulation and government spending, jobs and the economy.
“I will not defame Congressman (Walter) Jones’ name or family in any way,” Piner said.
Jones is currently representing the district in his 8th term in Congress.
