Filing by former SBI agent makes run for sheriff official

Former SBI special agent Eric Wayne Smith wrote a check for $886.44  and filed for the May primary challenging incumbent Sheriff Jerry Monette Tuesday morning.

Smith, who resigned recently after two years as the investigator for the Craven County District Attorney’s Office, which investigates crimes in Craven, Carteret and Pamlico counties, said the sheriff’s offices in the state are no longer a network of folks knowing parents, children, brothers and sisters. “We have people living here from all over; we must be proactive and not reactive.”

“I really want to give back to the people,” he said.

Smith states on election material, “Craven County has grown rapidly in the past 10 years and also has the demands on law enforcement. My experience and training can provide the citizens of this county the level of expertise and professionalism they deserve.”

He filed at election headquarters with his wife Susie and 2½ year-old grandson Gabriel in tow.

Susie Smith said she was excited and happy for her husband. “He will do a good job,” she said.

Smith, 58, is a Vietnam veteran, had been a Marine Corps captain, assistant personnel manager of Corning Glass, and a basic law enforcement instructor for Craven Community College.
