French students broaden cultural knowledge

Students in Kinston High School's French Club did more than learn the language this year: they took steps to experience the culture.

"We actively seek to broaden students' knowledge of the French culture and, as a club, also help our community," Diane Bowen, Spanish and French teacher and French Club sponsor, said.

The year's projects and broadening opportunities were determined by the teachers and students working with the club officers - Stephanie Fisk, president; Damian Ogbaugo, vice president; Justin Stokes Pressly, secretary; and Thomas Lawson, historian.

Looking back on the year, the club named some highlights, including challenging Spanish students to an after-school soccer game, and sampling a "gateau du roi" (King Cake) and crowning the "Mardi Gras" king at a Mardi Gras celebration.

On a trip to the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh, the students viewed French art and tasted French cuisine, including croques monsieurs, crepes, escargots and crème brulee at Saint Jacques Restaurant.

The club's 18th annual community service project was purchasing and wrapping gifts for a foster child at Christmas.
