GRANTSBORO - Construction is underway on the Heritage Memorial Walkway project at the Pamlico County Heritage Center museum.
The Pamlico County Historical Association project will connect the museum with the Pamlico County Visitors Center.
To date, 319 laser-engraved bricks are ready for installation as part of Phase I. Barbara Kerr, who is handling public relations and brick sales, said orders are being taken for another 100 bricks.
The bricks are $50 and each one is engraved with a maximum of three lines, with 18 characters in each line.
"The walkway is extraordinary because it creates a professional landscape infused with history," Kerr said.
The walkway was the idea of Norman Earl Banks, Kerr said. He is chairman of the project.
Kerr said bricks had been purchased in memorial, and in some cases to denote historic or special family events, along with groups and organizations.
Examples of events include Pamlico County being established in 1872; the upcoming completion of the N.C. 55 project east from Craven County to Bayboro; and Holt's Chapel School being established in 1920.
She said bricks honor groups such as Grantsboro Piggly Wiggly employees, the Goose Creek Island 55-plus Club; and veterans of Pamlico County.
"Pamlico County Historical Association offers everyone an opportunity to record history and county events," Kerr said.
Order forms are available at the Heritage and Visitors Center. Call (252) 745-2239, to have a form sent.
The Buy-A-Brick project will continue as additional walkways are installed throughout the Heritage Village.
Kerr said former residents have been among those buying bricks, including people from nine states. She said the bricks also make suitable gifts for graduations, wedding, birthdays and other special occasions.
Hardy Construction expects to have the project completed within a month, Kerr said. Bert Horne of Dreamscape Landscape is the bricklayer.
