Tropical Storm Hanna forms

Track of storm remains unclear

Havelock News

Tropical Storm Hanna formed Thursday morning, and forecasters predict movement toward the East Coast of the United States.

According to the National Hurricane Center, Hanna's 40 mph winds are expected to increase to 75 mph by the weekend, making it a hurricane.

At 11 a.m. Thursday, Hanna was centered at 20.5 north and 59.2 west or about 305 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands. Movement is toward the west-northwest at 12 mph.

Forecasters expect the storm to continue moving toward the East Coast as it strengthens, placing the storm east of the Bahamas by Monday. However, longterm forecasts on where the storm will go and if it will impact the East Coast or North Carolina remain unclear.

According to the National Hurricane Center, there is much uncertainty for Hanna's strength and movement in long-range forecasts.

Some long-range forecast models show the storm taking a westerly track in the general direction of Florida, while others curve the storm northeast and away from the East Coast.

Either way, the storm would not have a major impact on the East Coast until well after the Labor Day holiday.
