Construction worker killed when backhoe slid into ditch

Freedom ENC

HAVELOCK — A backhoe slid into a ditch on North Nunn Street on Thursday, killing the operator who was trapped underneath.

The incident happened around noon behind the Budget Inn hotel in Havelock.

Diane Miller, city spokeswoman, said initial reports indicate the worker was in the process of moving dirt and putting down sod when the incident occurred. He died at the scene.

The name of the person has not been released, pending notification of family.

Officials with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration are investigating.

The worker was a private contractor working with two others at the time. The coworkers were on the other side of the building and did not see the backhoe slip into the ditch.
