Attempted suicide at jail

BEAUFORT - An inmate at the Carteret County Jail was undergoing treatment at an area hospital Friday after a suicide attempt Thursday evening, authorities said.

Detention officers extricated Sherri Marie Garfin, 27, of Morehead City, just moments after she attempted to commit suicide by hanging herself in her cell, according to a news release issued by the Carteret County Sheriff 's Office.

Officers began lifesaving measures until rescue personnel arrived on scene.

Garfin was transported to Carteret General Hospital and subsequently transferred to Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, where she was receiving treatment Friday, the release said.

Following standard procedure, the sheriff 's office has contacted the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation, which is investigating the incident.
