Sampson county native plans to run for state Senate
Dewey Hudson, who presently serves as the district attorney for the Fourth Prosecutorial District, recently announced he will not seek re-election.
The Sampson county native has served as the DA for Jones, Duplin, Sampson and Onslow counties since 1998.
Although Hudson will not be filing for candidacy as DA on Feb. 8, he is planning to run for election to the General Assembly in the 10th Senatorial District.
“I am running for the state Senate because I believe I have the background, abilities and qualifications necessary to deal with the serious problems facing our district and our state,” he said. “As the elected DA, it is my responsibility to administer justice in enforcing the laws enacted by our legislature.
“In doing so, I have to collaborate with many agencies and offices at he local, state and national levels.”
Hudson’s decision was sparked by the announcement that Sen. Charlie Albertson, D-Duplin, who currently serves as the 10th Senatorial District representative, will not seek re-election.
“I would like to commend and thank Sen. Albertson for his service as a legislator for more than 20 years,” Hudson said. “During that time he has been a dedicated and effective representative for the (residents) of his district and the people of North Carolina.”
Education, crime and local economy will be Hudson’s primary focus if elected to the state Senate.
“I will be a strong advocate in the legislature involving issues of gangs and crime to protect our families and make our communities safer,” he said. “Our courts and criminal justice system need a major overhaul to improve effectiveness and efficiency.
“I think from my experience as a career prosecutor that I know what laws we need to change to protect law-abiding citizens.”
Hudson becomes the first Democrat to publicly announce his intentions to run for the office. Current Lenoir County commissioner Chris Humphrey is the only Republican to announce for the office.
