Details of Tuesday night fatality released

HUGO - Alexian Melhado, 22, of Grifton, was killed in a car accident Tuesday evening at 5:50 p.m. The accident occurred at 3405 Hugo Road.

Sgt. G.S. Hemby of the State Highway Patrol said Melhado was driving a 1996 Oldsmobile van north on Hugo Road. A second driver in a Nissan automobile was following behind.

A third driver in a GMC Sierra truck was traveling south. Melhado's vehicle crossed the center line and struck the GMC truck head on. Melhado's vehicle was then struck from behind by the Nissan.

Melhado was transported to Lenoir Memorial Hospital and later pronounced dead. The driver of the GMC truck was airlifted to Pitt Memorial Hospital.

"We do not know the status of the driver of the GMC, but we do not believe his injuries are life threatening," Hemby said. "The driver of the Nissan was taken to LMH in a private vehicle with only minor injuries."

Hemby said no charges will be filed in this case.
