The Kinston Department of Public Safety has charged a Kinston man with taking indecent liberties with a minor, a felony offense that allegedly took place on Valentine’s Day.
The suspect, Timothy Lee Burton, 44, of 656 MLK Jr. Blvd., was charged with the crime on Wednesday. The alleged victim is a 12-year-old girl.
“Burton is an acquaintance of the victim’s father,” KDPS Sgt. Craig Jarman said. “It appears the incident took place in the home of the victim’s father on Feb. 14.”
Jarman said the victim’s father was in a separate part of the house when the alleged incident occurred.
“The victim mentioned the incident to some classmates on Feb. 19,” Jarman said. “Some of those classmates relayed the information to a school official, and that’s when the matter was turned over to us.”
Jarman said the victim’s parents were not told about the incident until they were contacted by the KDPS.
Burton’s first appearance at the Lenoir County Courthouse was scheduled for Thursday. Burton has no prior criminal record.
