LCC president encourages life-long quest for learning

Staff Writer

Dressed in a black cap and gown, Toni Oates of Kinston received her associate degree in medical office administration Friday night during Lenoir Community College's 46th commencement.

"I'm glad graduation is here," Oates said. "It's been a long time coming."

Oates was among 511 LCC students Friday in the school's gym where the ceremony was held. Kimberly Brock, Melissa Britt and Trevoya Wallace were also in line to get their diplomas.

"It's a very exciting day," Brock said. "LCC is a great place."

Brock received her associate degree in applied science in the medical assistance field.

Wallace's mother, Barbara, attended the ceremony holding several celebratory balloons at her side.

"We plan to celebrate some more on Saturday," she said.

Britt's family also showed their support during the graduation.

"I'm so proud of her accomplishment," Britt's mother, Gladys Riddick said.

Several of the graduates' families cheered and applauded during commencement. LCC President Brantley Briley was the ceremonies' keynote speaker.

Briley encouraged the graduates to take an initiative in life-long learning and that the "quest for knowledge should never end."

"This college has a very rich history," Briley said. "Today is just the beginning for you."

Additional commencement speakers included LCC Board of Trustees President Grady Bethel and Student Government Association President Chris Bridgeforth.

"At LCC, we started with humble beginnings," Bethel said. "Today we are one of the leading community colleges in North Carolina and have always served with excellence."

Bridgeforth thanked the graduates for allowing him to serve them as student president.

"I wish you the best and success in all of your endeavors," he told the graduates.

Lenoir County Commission Chairman Paul Taylor Jr. and Rep. Van Braxton, D-Kinston, helped hand out the degrees, certificates, and diplomas.

Music during the ceremony was provided by LCC cosmetology instructor Pam Parker-Ingram.
