    Staff Writer

WHEAT SWAMP — An early morning head-on collision near North Lenoir High School slowed traffic Thursday morning.

At approximately 7:40 a.m., the N.C. Highway Patrol responded to a vehicle accident on Wheat Swamp Road near the high school.

The accident involved a 1997 Nissan driven by Joshua Tyson, 19, of Airlee Avenue, Kinston, and a 2009 Ford Expedition driven by Nikole Eatman Scott, 37, of Springwood Lane, Kinston.

According to State Trooper J.B. Locklear, Tyson was traveling west on Wheat Swamp Road, while Scott was traveling east on the same road.

“The driver of vehicle 1 (Tyson) traveled left of center and struck vehicle 2 head on,” Locklear said. “Both vehicles came to an uncontrolled stop in a ditch.”

At the scene, there appeared to be no serious injuries stemming from the accident.

“Both drivers were taken to Lenoir Memorial Hospital as a precaution,” Locklear said.

Damages to Tyson’s vehicle were estimated at $1,500, while damages to Scott’s vehicle were estimated at $8,500.

Locklear said Tyson would be charged with driving left of center.
