lighthouse hopes for makeover

BODIE ISLAND - Bodie Island Lighthouse is hoping for a makeover.

The North Carolina lighthouse is one of 12 finalists in a competition to receive new windows and doors as part of JELD-WEN's lighthouse restoration initiative.

The company narrowed the field of candidates from 49 to 12 and has posted a ballot on its Web site, www.jeld-wen.com/lighthouse, so the public can vote to help select the ultimate winner.

Voting ends at 3 a.m. on Sept. 7.

Only one vote per e-mail address will be counted.

The other 11 lighthouses are Baltimore Harbor Lighthouse in Maryland; Cedar Island Lighthouse in New York; Grand Traverse Lighthouse in Michigan; Grays Harbor Light Station in Washington; New Canal Lighthouse in Louisiana; New Dungeness Lighthouse Station in Washington; Pemaquid Point Lighthouse in Maine; Plum Island Station in Wisconsin; Point Arena Light Station in California; Rose Island Lighthousein Rhode Island; and Toledo Harbor Light house in Ohio.
