Fleet Readiness Center to receive award

Sun Journal

CHERRY POINT - The Navy's Fleet Readiness Center East at Cherry Point has been recognized by the U.S. secretary of defense for outstanding achievement in 2008.

The Department of Defense announced Monday that the center, which employs about 4,000 civilians at the Marine Corps Air Station at Cherry Point, will receive the Robert T. Mason Depot Maintenance Excellence Award.

The annual award recognizes maintenance work on military equipment and weapon systems by the H-1 Aircraft Production Program at Fleet Readiness, the division that repairs and refits the AH-1 Cobra and UH-1 Huey aircraft.

The award is named for a former assistant deputy undersecretary of defense for maintenance policy, programs, and resources. Mason served as the champion of depot maintenance for three decades, while helping to transform depot-level operations.

The award will be presented Oct. 29 during the 2008 Defense Department Maintenance Symposium and Exhibition at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Denver, Colo.
